The DOJ’s illegal witch hunt against conservatives has been exposed again.
This time, they falsely smeared a member of Congress.
And now, Matt Gaetz’s reputation has been destroyed by Deep State prosecutors.
In early 2021, the New York Times breathlessly reported a wild story involving Matt Gaetz supposedly trafficking underage girls for sex, and being under investigation by the Department of Justice.
The story had very little corroboration, but the liberal media ran with it as an easy way to smear one of their ideological enemies.
The Times excitedly reported, “Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida and a close ally of former President Donald J. Trump, is being investigated by the Justice Department over whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year old and paid for her to travel with him, according to three people briefed on the matter.”
Right off the bat, there were people who smelled a fish.
Glenn Greenwald, who is so often ahead of the curve on stories like this, had this to say in a piece that he wrote on Substack on April 11th:
“So reckless is the discourse around this case that it is now frequently asserted in major outlets that Rep. Gaetz faces ‘charges’ of sex trafficking and sex with a minor, even though that claim is, at least as of now, blatantly untrue.”
The prosecutors involved in the case were also more than happy to leak damaging information to the press, which is likely how the story became publicized in the first place.
Since that time, no charges have been filed against Gaetz, and the case has quietly disappeared from the public view.
But the damage to Gaetz’s reputation still remains.
And as Greenwald stated in a recent video on the case, virtually nobody has the courage to come to his defense, lest they themselves be accused of pedophilia.
“One of the reason why people are loathe to talk about this case is because when you stand up the rights of somebody who has been said – not charged with or convicted of – but has been said to be investigated for something like importing a 17-year old girl across state lines to pay her to have sex, you yourself instantly get accused, by smear artists, of only doing that not out of real conviction for the principles involved, but because you yourself must also be a pedophile.”
There are certainly reasons to be skeptical of Matt Gaetz as a politician. He seems to crave public attention and adulation, and has shown an obsession with generating headlines.
But regardless of his rightness or wrongness about political issues or policies, the fact is that no one deserves to have their reputation smeared by the Deep State for crimes that they did not commit.
It’s wrong if it happens to Matt Gaetz. It’s wrong if it happens to Donald Trump. It’s wrong if it happens to Joe Biden or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The Deep State has no right to smear and to lie about people and to illegally leak false information about them.
