The “woke” movement isn’t as new of a phenomenon as some people think. The reality is that it’s been percolating in our culture for quite some time now.
Its origins are a combination of a number of different ingredients.
It has roots in Marxist movements of the 20th century, particularly certain Marxist intellectuals from the ‘90s who created some of the “woke” terminology that the Left uses today.
There are also roots that go back even further, coming from the bleeding-heart spirit of the Yankee Protestant culture that is prominent in certain parts of the country.
And the movement has certainly been supercharged by the social media technology that has come of age in the last decade and enabled young idealists to organize much more easily and effectively.
All of it has come together in a toxic brew that has led to the authoritarian woke movement we see now. And in this episode of Making the Argument, Nick Freitas exposes all of it.
