After he crushed Democrats in Florida, Ron DeSantis became a household name.
Rumors have been swirling for months that he would run for president.
And now, Ron DeSantis just made one huge announcement about 2024.
After months of speculation, it appears to be official that Ron DeSantis will jump into the 2024 presidential primary field.
At the moment, the only major candidate that has launched a campaign is former President Donald Trump.
DeSantis jumping into the primary will make the contest a true two-person race.
He has been widely considered a potential presidential candidate due to his crushing defeat of Democrats in Florida last year, where DeSantis won the largest GOP victory in the state in over 150 years.
What’s more, DeSantis has spearheaded a conservative agenda that has seen the Florida governor push back hard against wokeism within both the private and public sector, leading to successful fights against the state university system, Disney, and major investment firms like BlackRock.
But DeSantis has been busy governing Florida after his landslide re-election victory last year, and intentionally chose to hold off on any presidential announcement until after the state legislative session concluded.
But with winter now over, DeSantis is free to begin mobilizing his team to formally launch a campaign later this year.
It is expected that sometime in the next two to three months DeSantis will officially announce, but according to MSN, he has already privately confirmed that he intends to run for president.
MSN reports, “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has indicated privately that he intends to run for president, according to two people familiar with his comments. A political committee that seeks to draft DeSantis into the race launched Thursday and is likely to serve as an approved outside spending vehicle for his campaign, three people familiar with the planning said.
“The public and private movements underline how far along DeSantis and his allies are in their preparation for the 2024 campaign, even as the Florida governor has not said publicly that he will enter the race.”
DeSantis’s decision comes at a time when opinion polls show him crushing Joe Biden in a hypothetical 2024 matchup.
Biden trails DeSantis badly in numerous battleground states, and there are even polls that show formerly blue states like Virginia appear poised to back DeSantis over the Democrat.
The bigger problem DeSantis has is actually winning the Republican Party’s nomination, as polls show him effectively tied with Donald Trump nationwide, while DeSantis currently leads Trump in primary states like Iowa, Florida, Texas, and California.
While these are important states for the GOP nomination contest, they are not enough to secure the nomination by themselves.
DeSantis was already the first candidate to travel to Iowa, despite not having officially announced yet that he is running for president.
He now intends to visit Nevada, which is another early primary state that could end up playing a pivotal role in both the primary and general election contest next year.
Trump and DeSantis are expected to have one of the largest party nomination battles in modern political history, and both the betting markets and political pundits alike remain unsure as to who will eventually emerge victorious.
