Bill Maher has to be seriously regretting his decision.
He just endorsed John Fetterman for President in 2028.
But then Fetterman humiliated him in a very bad way.
Bill Maher despises Donald Trump, but is finding it difficult to identify as a Democrat as the party moves farther and farther to the left.
Maher got excited about John Fetterman – who presents himself as a moderate and a reasonable “man of the people” – and thought Fetterman could be the future of the Democrat Party.
But the problem is, while Fetterman’s “man of the people” schtick might authentically represent who he is on a personal level, it gives a misleading view into his politics.
Fetterman is not a working-class “blue dog Democrat” and his social views are as far left as any other Democrat in Congress.
According to the Daily Mail, “Bill Maher made a shocking endorsement for a ‘Trump-like’ Democrat to run for president in the next election: Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman.”
“The ‘Real Time’ host said that ‘Democrats need to find their Trump’ during his show on Friday evening, and he thinks Fetterman might be right for the job.”
But it’s going to be difficult for Fetterman to sell working class Americans on the idea that he’s just like them while allowing biological men to play in women’s sports, which is exactly what he did right after Maher endorsed him.
According to Outkick, “On Jan. 14, the Republican-majority House of Representatives passed the ‘Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act’ by a 218-206 margin with all Republicans voting ‘yea’ and all but two Democrats voting ‘nay.’”
“Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.) sponsored the House bill, and there was a similar bill in the Senate sponsored by Tommy Tuberville. Unfortunately, Tuberville’s common-sense bill failed to pass the Senate on Monday because Republicans needed multiple Democrats to vote in favor.”
“But none of them did. Not one Democratic senator was willing to say ‘no, males do not belong in women’s sports.’”
That list included Fetterman and likely did not sit well with Maher.
No reasonable person would consider Fetterman’s views on transgender athletes as being “moderate” – including Maher, who has harshly criticized allowing transgender men to compete in women’s sports.
