No one expected the NAACP to do this to Joe Biden.
They have been by his side since the beginning of his presidency.
But civil war has erupted among the Democrats and it could mean the end for Joe Biden.
On most issues, Democrats have been very united for quite a long time.
However, on the issue of Israel, Democrats have splintered more than they have in many years.
Young progressives are on the side of Hamas, whereas many of the establishment donors side with Israel.
This is a problem for Joe Biden, who has to manage these two conflicting sides of the party.
Even a group like the NAACP, which would seem to have no dog in this fight, has jumped on the side of the young progressives calling for an end of assistance to Israel.
According to Reuters, “The NAACP urged President Joe Biden on Thursday to ‘indefinitely’ halt all weapons deliveries to Israel and pressure the U.S. ally to end its war in the Gaza Strip, sending a reminder that his support for Israel could hurt him among Black voters in November’s election.”
“The NAACP’s call was a rare instance of the influential civil rights organization taking a position on U.S. foreign policy towards a country without a significant Black population. It appeared likely to deepen the Democratic president’s election-year challenges as he tries to back a key ally abroad and temper unrest among his supporters at home.”
The problem for Biden is that most Americans do not support Hamas, but a small minority of Democrat voters very loudly do.
This might be an impossible tightrope to walk as he seeks to keep his base happy while expanding his appeal to swing voters.
The article continues, “The NAACP, which has advocated for racial justice and rights for Black Americans, said the U.S. must use its influence with Israel to bring a permanent ceasefire to Gaza. According to health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave, Israel’s campaign has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, caused widespread hunger and displaced most of the population from their homes.”
“The NAACP stance represents the latest warning sign that Biden may pay a price at the ballot box among Black voters on Nov. 5 for his staunch support of Israel.”
Most black voters almost certainly care very little about the situation in Israel – at least in comparison to more pressing issues at home like jobs and the economy.
But the fact that Biden is losing the support of one of the most influential left-wing lobbying groups in America does not bode well for his prospects.
Joe Biden’s re-election campaign is in serious danger as his party falls apart at the seams over the war between Israel and Hamas.
