Biden thought he had the Supreme Court backed into a corner.
But then he got news that changed everything.
And now the Supreme Court has won a decisive victory over Joe Biden.
The Democrats believe that the Republicans’ kryptonite this November is going to be the abortion issue and the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Typically, the party who holds the presidency loses seats in the midterm elections, as angry voters from the other party flock to the polls to register their discontent.
That logic applied to Obama, as angry Republicans flooded the polls in 2010. It happened with Trump, as angry Democrats handed the GOP huge losses in 2018.
And presumably, it will happen again with Biden this year since Republicans are furious at him.
But Democrats think the abortion issue is going to save them. They think that pro-choice voters who otherwise might have stayed home will show up to vote in November and help the Democrats win.
That might have sounded like a solid plan for them – until the latest news about the Supreme Court came out.
Democrats almost certainly expected a backlash against the Supreme Court after their Dobbs ruling, which overturned Roe v. Wade.
But according to a new Gallup poll, that backlash has not materialized at all.
According to Gallup, “After several prominent rulings at the end of its term in June, most of which were decided in favor of conservatives’ positions on the issues, the U.S. Supreme Court’s overall job approval rating is 43%, statistically unchanged from last year’s 40% reading.”
That’s right – instead of going down in response to the controversial rulings, the Supreme Court’s approval rating actually went up 3 percentage points.
This is catastrophic news for the Democrats. The one issue that they have been hanging their hats on in order to win big victories in the fall seems to have fallen completely flat.
The Roe v. Wade issue and the abortion debate surrounding it was the top news story in the country for a few weeks, but it has simmered down and Americans have moved on to other topics.
This means Democrats will be stuck running on Joe Biden’s record in the fall. And with the economy in the shape that it’s in, and his approval ratings as bad as ever, that’s going to be a losing proposition for them.
Some Democrats are still furious about Roe being overturned, and those people will surely show up to vote.
But in many cases, they are people who would have shown up to vote for Democrats anyway. Their anger will make zero difference in the end results.
And on top of that, the Democrats’ strategy to discredit the Supreme Court has clearly failed.
The Supreme Court is still polling at the same level it was last year, and it has kept its legitimacy. That is great news for America, as it would have been extremely dangerous to our institutions if the Supreme Court had fallen.
It remains to be seen how the abortion debate will shake out, but the Democrats clearly cannot rely on it to be their winning issue in November.
