Freedom of Speech is under attack like never before.
This time, the Left has been using media giants like Facebook and Twitter to censor views they disagree with.
And now, Elon Musk just issued one massive warning about the Left’s growing desire for censorship.
Decades ago, the Left in America claimed to support Freedom of Speech as one of the absolute freedoms that the American Constitution protected.
But now, the Left has routinely called for their opposition to be censored, slammed, and driven from the public circle.
Things have gotten so bad that there are even some calls from the Left to fire and even arrest those who oppose their views publicly.
A recent Pew Research poll showed just how far the Left has gone in endorsing government force to silence those on the other side of the debate.
From 2017 to 2020, the number of Democrats who said they agree that “people being able to freely speak their minds online” is important to them fell from 45% to 38%.
Far more dangerous however was the number of Americans on the Left who wants either the Federal Government or Big Tech to restrict speech en-mass online.
The percentage of Democrats who said “The U.S. government should take steps to restrict false info online even if it limits freedom of info” rose from 40% in 2017 to an astonishing 65% in 2021.
What’s more, even larger numbers of Democrats support using Big Tech to impose censorship rules online, with 76% of Democrats saying they believe “Tech companies should take steps to restrict false info online, even if it limits freedom of info.” That figure marked a 16-point increase from 2018, when 60% of Democrats agreed with that statement.
It now appears that many outlets are doing precisely that, though their definition of “false info” often simply means “whatever the Left disagrees with.”
And now, Elon Musk is sounding the alarm about the erosion of free speech online.
Newsweek reports, “Tesla CEO Elon Musk asked his followers on Twitter if a “new platform” is needed after he criticized the social media giant over free speech.”
“Is a new platform needed?” Musk on Twitter.
Musk’s Twitter poll on the question of whether or not the platform protected free speech had over 2 million votes cast, with over 70% of those who voted answering “no.”
He added to the poll an additional cryptic comment, “The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.”
This has led to speculation that Musk may be interested in buying either a controlling stake in Twitter, or perhaps promoting an alternative platform to compete with the social media giant.
Musk added fuel to this speculation when he also tweeted, “Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?”
These comments drew many calls for Musk to simply buy Twitter outright, with one conservative commentator, Mike Cernovich, tweeting “If you’re a leftist making death threats against conservatives. or organizing riots, Twitter respects your freedom of speech. Twitter also respects the freedom of speech for media hoaxes like when every major outlet framed an innocent Covington high school kid.”
Musk simply replied, “Doesn’t sound very balanced,” hinting that he plans to do something in the near future regarding the state of freedom of speech on Twitter.
