No one saw this turn of events coming.
This breaking news had D.C. buzzing.
Donald Trump’s close family member has decided to step down from something big.
When Marco Rubio was named as Donald Trump’s new nominee for Secretary of State, there was immediate speculation about who would be named to replace him in the U.S. Senate.
Names began to be thrown around, including Rep. Byron Donalds, other members of Congress, or even Gov. Ron DeSantis himself.
However, the speculation soon settled on one name, Lara Trump, whom many assumed would get the seat because of her last name.
Now, much to everyone’s surprise, Lara Trump has stepped down from consideration for the seat.
According to ABC 7, “Lara Trump has withdrawn herself from consideration for Florida’s Senate seat to replace outgoing Sen. Marco Rubio, she announced on social media on Saturday.”
“Trump, President-elect Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, had been rumored to be in the running to replace Rubio, who is set to be tapped as secretary of state in the second Trump administration. Lara Trump had stepped down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee earlier this month, saying she ‘would seriously consider’ the Senate seat.”
Now, however, Lara Trump doesn’t have any role in the government or in the GOP, as she left her job co-chairing the RNC presumably with the belief she would become a U.S. Senator.
The article continues, “The confirmation of Rubio as secretary of state would create an open Senate seat for Florida, and Gov. Ron DeSantis would need to tap someone to fill the vacancy and serve the rest of Rubio’s term, until 2026.”
“Lara Trump had been appointed RNC co-chair in March alongside Michael Whatley, and they were heavily involved in generating excitement among the GOP ahead of the 2024 elections.”
It remains to be seen what type of role Lara Trump takes going forward.
Furthermore, it will be fascinating to see who DeSantis appoints to the vacant seat now.
In any case, one has to wonder exactly what factored into Lara Trump’s decision to forgo one of the most powerful positions in America.
