This move by Trump sent shockwaves throughout the country.
He made a very significant move to seize power.
And it’s anyone’s guess where things will go from here.
Donald Trump has made it clear he wants the presidency to have more power, and he is making significant moves to turn this into a new reality.
Typically the president has checks and balances on him and isn’t able to do everything that he wants to do, but Trump is attempting to change that, perhaps in a permanent way.
His new method for doing that is with an executive order that would bring oversight agencies under his direct control.
This would give Trump direct power over the federal government and allow him to do essentially whatever he wants with these agencies.
According to Politico, “President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a sweeping executive order bringing independent agencies under the control of the White House — an action that would greatly expand his power but is likely to attract significant legal challenges.”
“It represents Trump’s latest attempt to consolidate power beyond boundaries other presidents have observed and to test the so-called unitary executive theory, which states that the president has the sole authority over the executive branch. And it reflects the influence of Russ Vought, Trump’s budget chief, one of several conservatives in his orbit who have called for axing independent arms of the executive branch.”
Many people are wondering what exactly Trump is planning to do with these agencies, but it can be very difficult to predict what Trump’s next move is going to be.
The early days of his second term have been wildly unpredictable and perhaps not even his inner circle of advisors know exactly what his end goal is.
The article continues, “While the executive order is sweeping in nature and represents a fundamental reshaping of the federal government, it effectively codifies actions the Trump administration has already been taking, setting up the administration’s legal position in an expected court fight. Trump has, for instance, already fired Gwynne Wilcox, former chair of the National Labor Relations Board, the NLRB’s general counsel, Jennifer Abruzzo, and Office of Government Ethics Director David Huitema. Wilcox has filed a lawsuit contesting her dismissal.”
The fact that Trump is expanding the power of the presidency so broadly and so abruptly has definitely caught people’s attention.
