Donald Trump is not messing around.
He’s stirring up massive controversy around the world.
And this latest news about Trump’s threat to invade Panama is something you don’t want to miss.
Donald Trump is trying to expand the borders of the United States and he might go to some fairly unimaginable lengths to do it.
While Trump hasn’t explicitly used the word “invasion,” he has talked about taking back the Panama Canal and it sounds like he could use force to do it.
This has not made Panama’s president Jose Raul Mulino very happy, who was quick to respond stating that the canal will always belong to Panama and the U.S. has no business invading the country to take it back.
According to Reuters, “Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino responded ‘be serious, be serious’ on Wednesday when asked in Davos whether he was concerned the U.S. would invade after President Donald Trump said he would take back the Panama Canal.”
“Mulino declined to answer other questions after speaking on a panel session addressing Latin America’s ‘faultlines’ at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in the Swiss resort.”
Trump has already accomplished many things in just his first week as president that’s caused celebration among his supporters like reaffirming that there are only two biological sexes.
But invading Panama would be by far the most controversial thing he’s done.
The article continues, “In his inauguration speech on Monday that invoked the 19th century expansionist doctrine of ‘Manifest Destiny,’ Trump repeated his aspiration that the United States would take back the canal, which is a key route for world shipping.”
“Trump gave no further details on when or how he intended to reclaim the canal – which is the sovereign territory of an ally – but has previously refused to rule out possible use of military force, drawing criticism from Washington’s Latin American friends and foes alike.”
An invasion would surely cost countless lives, both American and Panamanian, and could cause damage in other ways.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with Trump wanting Greenland and the Panama Canal to be under American control, but he should find the most peaceful way possible to make that goal a reality.
