Turmoil has hit the Trump administration.
Donald Trump was not hoping to get off to a start like this.
And one important figure suddenly quit the administration in a very public way.
When Donald Trump nominated Matt Gaetz to be the Attorney General, he had to have known that it wasn’t going to be taken very well by the U.S. Senate.
Gaetz is one of the most controversial members of Congress of his generation, owing not only to his political actions but also the scandals he has been plagued with.
Regardless of whether the scandals are true – he says they are not – Gaetz has a lot of baggage other conservatives do not.
That’s why people were very surprised to see him nominated to such a high-ranking post.
A lot of political observers thought that Trump was trying to force a vote on a very controversial nominee to see where Senators stood and get them on the record.
But that vote will not happen now as Gaetz has decided to remove his name from consideration for Attorney General after all th controversy over his nomination exploded.
According to the BBC, “Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name from consideration to become attorney general after days of debate over whether to release a congressional report on sexual misconduct allegations against him.”
“On X, formerly Twitter, the 42-year-old said that the controversy over his potential nomination ‘was unfairly becoming a distraction’ to the work of the incoming Trump administration.”
Regardless of whether the allegations are true, it does seem that Gaetz at a minimum has been involved in some personal activities that one wouldn’t necessarily want an Attorney General involved in.
The article continues, “The withdrawal of Gaetz – who Donald Trump selected to be the top US law enforcement officer – represents a setback for the president-elect.”
“On his own Truth Social social media platform, the former and soon-to-be president said he appreciated Gaetz’s effort to become attorney general.”
“In his post on X, formerly Twitter, Gaetz said that Trump’s justice department ‘must be in place and ready’ on the first day of his administration in January.”
“Lawmakers – including some fellow Senate Republicans – had expressed concern about his nomination, reportedly prompting a significant closed-door effort by him and Trump to secure the necessary support.”
It seemed likely that Trump was going to press ahead with forcing a vote on this nomination even if he knew that it was going to get voted down.
This could have forced Senators into a position where they had to vote with Trump on nearly everything else to contain the backlash they would face for voting against Gaetz.
Now that will not happen, however, as Gaetz has removed his name from consideration.
It appears that Trump’s replacement nominee, former Florida AG Pam Bondi, will fare a lot better with the Senate.
