With the coronavirus pandemic finally coming to an end, calls to reopen America are reaching a fever pitch.
But several Democratic governors are dragging their feet to end the restrictions.
And one Democrat just destroyed their career with yet another COVID lockdown.
After over a year, the end is in sight for the coronavirus pandemic.
Thanks to a series of vaccines developed during the Trump presidency, cases of the virus have dropped to their lowest levels in months.
But even with signs that a “return to normalcy” is on the horizon, there are several Democratic governors that are doing their best to still keep their states in complete and total lockdown.
And among those with the most extreme record of handling the coronavirus pandemic is Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Witmer has been routinely viewed as one of the “worst of the worst” out of a host of Democratic governors who have tried to defeat the virus by sabotaging their own state’s economy, forcing their businesses to shut down and imposing mandatory stay at home orders on their citizens.
But now that a clear path exists for the virus to finally be defeated, the calls for reopening America’s economy, businesses, schools, and public spaces is beginning to reach a fever pitch.
Whitmer however is apparently content to not just keep the lockdown status quo, but to impose even more draconian restrictions on her state.
The Detroit News reports, “Amid the spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the state, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Friday strongly urged a two-week pause for youth sports, in-person high school classes and in-door dining.”
“The governor asked people to avoid indoor gatherings in general and pushed for more residents to get one of the three COVID-19 vaccines, noting a steady supply and demand could mean the state reaches its goal of 70% vaccination of individuals 16 years and older by mid-May at the earliest,” adds The Detroit News.
Whitmer knows that there’s practically no way the public will go along with yet another mandatory shutdown however, so she’s letting this directive be “voluntary” for the time being.
Though with over 25% of Michigan’s population having already been vaccinated, there appears to be little chance that the people of Michigan will voluntarily allow their state to be shut down yet again.
Under Whitmer, not only did Michigan see one of the strictest coronavirus-related lockdowns in the country, rivaling both New York and California, but some of the restrictions were characterized by critics as being unnecessarily petty in nature.
For example, Whitmer was lambasted last year when businesses, complying with several shutdown orders, tapped off sections of their stores and prevented their customers from purchasing certain items like gardening supplies.
Whitmer’s critics continue to call for her to remove the remaining restrictions she has in place.
The Detroit News reports, “On Friday, House Speaker Jason Wentworth, R-Farwell, said he was glad Whitmer ‘encouraged personal responsibility and safety’ instead of requiring it through orders that have ‘hurt working people and children.”
In commenting on the recent “urging” to shut large parts of the state down yet again, Speaker Wentworth took a shot at the Democratic Governor.
“Now let’s take the next logical step,” Wentworth said. “Let’s remove the remaining restrictions in Michigan, put everyone back to work when they can do it safely, and trust the people of this state to do the right thing for themselves and their families.”
